A co-production between Binaural Nodar and the Municipality of Vouzela
Binaural Nodar and the Municipality of Vouzela announce the opening, on April 25th, 2024, of the audiovisual installation “O Alvor da Democracia em Vouzela” (The Dawn of Democracy in Vouzela), which looks at how the revolution of April 25th, 1974 was experienced and perceived in the municipality of Vouzela.
The installation will feature excerpts from thirteen interviews with residents or people from various parts of the municipality, as well as the testimony of some people whose professional and public lives were inextricably linked to Vouzela, all of whom shared their personal memories of the specific context they lived in at the time, which certainly influenced their perspective on the meaning of the revolution and the period that followed it.
In addition, the audiovisual installation will include excerpts from two local newspapers, Notícias de Vouzela and Vouga Livre, which portray some of the most important events and the most urgent needs of the population before and after the revolution (roads, access to electricity and piped water, health, education, etc.).
By delving into local history and individual experiences, this installation allows the public to reflect on the profound social, political, economic, cultural and educational changes that the revolution brought to the country, proposing a set of narratives, not necessarily coinciding with each other, about the hope and uncertainty of those times, the emergence of new political movements and the achievement of the much-desired freedom.
The opening of the installation “”O Alvor da Democracia em Vouzela” (The Dawn of Democracy in Vouzela) will take place at 12pm, at Lafões Cult Lab (Vouzela), as part of the municipal celebrations of April 25th, 1974, scheduled to take place immediately after the solemn session at the Cine Teatro João Ribeiro.
Note: The interviews conducted in the context of this project will be available in their entirety on April 25th, 2024, in a new thematic collection of the Digital Memory Archive of Vouzela: https://www.archive.binauralmedia.org/…/o-alvor-da…/.
Finally, Binaural Nodar would like to thank the newspaper “Notícias de Vouzela” for the access granted to its historical archive of newspapers published between 1973 and 1975, as well as to all the people interviewed for this project: Adelino Serrano, Alberto Correia, Ângela Carvalhas, António Alexandrino Matos, Augusto Antunes, Carlos Rodrigues, Fernando Duarte, Gil Silva, João Ferreira, João Vale de Andrade, José Mendes, Lucília Mendes and Raquel Ferreira.
