March 21st, 2024
Cine-Teatro João Ribeiro, Vouzela

With Rui Lima

A co-production between Binaural Nodar and the Municipality of Vouzela, with the collaboration of the Vocational School of Vouzela.

Composer Rui Lima was in residence at the Lafões Cult Lab between March 18th and 22nd, culminating in a concert for piano, voice and soundscapes, entitled “the center of the asymptote”.

The concert was attended by dozens of students from various courses at the Vocational School of Vouzela, who actively participated by commenting on what they were hearing and what was explained by the author.

The electroacoustic composition, entitled “o centro da assimptota” (the center of the asymptote), combines composition with sound recordings, voice and improvised piano on written themes. It is a work that is both idiosyncratic and collaborative, imagetic-metaphorical and concrete-descriptive, scientific and religious, which aims to portray some of the sensations that the landscape of the river Vouga network axis, at two different points – Vouzela and Aveiro – conveys. The artist is the sensitive recipient of the landscape’s stimuli, and serves as a small personal sample, a testimony to the public, re-transmitting sensations, ideas, images and thoughts acquired in the form of the composition. What impact does this landscape have on people, its symbiotic society, its inhabitants and those who visit it?

Rui Lima is from Lourosa, Aveiro. He graduated in Biology from the University of Aveiro in 2017 with an integrated internship in ecotoxicology, studying the effects of herbicides and salinity on zooplankton species in estuarine waters. Alongside his degree, he studied composition. Since 2016, some of his original compositions have been performed, experimenting with various music and theater groups. In 2021 he obtained a Master’s degree in Music from the University of Aveiro, developing his composition technique and creating a work linked to other scientific areas, inspired by the landscapes of the moons of the solar system.

In 2022 he published his first work, The Cliff, inspired by coastal geological strata; he was a resident artist through the Self-Mistake project. He has already participated in ten Erasmus+ projects, including training courses (TC), exchanges and volunteering. At the same time, he is a freelance musician in Devon (England).
