Sounds, images and flavors of migration
Saturday, June 17,th 2023, starting at 17h30
Largo Moraes de Carvalho and São Frei Gil Church (Vouzela)
Binaural Nodar, in partnership with the Municipality of Vouzela, The The Vocational School of Vouzela, Confraria dos Gastrónomos de Lafões and Cine Clube de Viseu present a community, artistic and gastronomic event, resulting from the artist residency Ecos da Ida e do Retorno (“Echoes of Leaving and Returning”), which took place in Vouzela since June 5th and is dedicated to the theme of migratory processes and their aesthetic and sensorial implications.
Starting at 5:30 pm, Uruguayan composers and sound artists Lucía Chamorro and Ricardo Arbiza will activate their interactive sound installation at Largo Moraes de Carvalho, which results from soundscape recordings made in the municipality of Vouzela and from interviews with former Portuguese emigrants and current immigrants from Africa and Brazil. The sound installation will also transform the sounds of the soundscape of the event itself and will be streamed to the radio of the Montevideo sound art festival (radiomonteaudio.org).
At 6:00 pm, Argentinean composer and improviser Silvia Angles will present an audiovisual concert (piano, voice, soundscapes, and video) at the São Frei Gil Church dedicated to gastronomic memories, both from Lafões and from various diasporas: that of young students from São Tomé e Principe who live in Vouzela, that of Venezuelan gastronomy that integrated the gastronomic heritage of Madeira Island, and of the artist herself, an Argentinean descendant of Czech, Catalan, Italian, and Swiss emigrants.
From 6:45 pm, the program continues under the sign of gastronomy, with a showcooking of the Vocational School of Vouzela, open to the community, to take place in Largo Moraes de Carvalho. The gastronomic result of this showcooking will integrate the following moment, a community sharing of flavors from several places, Argentina, São Tomé and Príncipe and Vouzela, to which all the public is invited to participate, being a free tasting.
During the gastronomic tasting, there will be two cultural moments, representative of the cultural diversity of Vouzela: a group of students from São Tomé and Príncipe who study at the Vocational School of Vouzela will show some typical dances of their country and the Grupo de Cavaquinhos Os Resistentes de Ventosa will present excerpts of the traditional songbook from the region of Lafões.
After the community gastronomic tasting, the session will continue at the São Frei Gil Church with the presentation of an experimental short film directed by the Finnish artist Riikka Haapasaari, a reflection about time and change, from a material so present in Vouzela’s landscape, granite.
Finally, the program ends with the screening, in partnership with the Cine Clube de Viseu, of the short film “António, lindo António” by Ana Maria Gomes, a documentary that seeks to find out the reasons why the uncle of the director, who left 50 years ago for Brazil, and never returned to his village in the municipality of São Pedro do Sul, to the indignation of his mother and brothers. Between a traditional Portugal and Rio de Janeiro where Mr. António settled down, an ocean of misunderstandings and omissions.
The event will end before 9:30pm, and afterwards the public will be able to watch the fashion show Florir Vouzela 2023 organized by the Municipality of Vouzela, which will take place at Alameda D. Duarte de Almeida.
