The third artist residency of “O Cantar da Pedra” (“The singing stone”) took place between September 1st and 8th, in the Portuguese Municipality of Figueiró dos Vinhos, as part of the Territories of Stone project, which also includes the Municipalities of Ansião and Pombal.
The team of Binaural Nodar, the entity that develops this creation, was comprised of Nely Ferreira and João Farelo (both sound recordings) and Mónica Garcia (visual interventions) and, throughout their stay, it was possible to make a wide range of sound recordings and interviews with various local people, which brought complementary perspectives on the importance of stone in Figueiró dos Vinhos: the stone typologies, namely schist, in the region; the construction of mills on the banks of torrential rivers; the old smithies of Foz de Alge; the local paver makers; the memories of old stonemasons, among others.
The final results of this creation will consist of a sound and visual exhibition, to be presented in November and December at three cultural spaces in the municipalities involved in the project, and also in a sound archive “O Cantar da Pedra” which will be online simultaneously with the opening of the exhibition for consultation by the general public.
