PAIVASCAPES #1 – PAIVA RIVER SOUND FESTIVAL Retrospective Exhibition of Sound and Audiovisual Works Estúdio Performas 8 - 11 June, 2011 It will be open to the public at Estúdio Performas in Aveiro (PT), between 8th and 11th June 2011, an itinerant retrospective exhibition of nine contemporary works in the areas of sound and intermedia art, all conceived as part of artist residencies that took place in 2010 from the source to the mouth of Paiva River. The authors used "site specific" methods of reflection and practice to broaden the perception of landscapes and river communities, thus escaping a purely instrumental understanding of rural areas, which unfortunately is becoming the general rule. The exhibition of these works in Aveiro, where is the mouth of the Vouga River, also aims to build bridges with organizations and individuals interested in collaborating on a future (and urgent) aesthetic reflection on this important Portuguese river, about to undergo an irreversible transformation with the construction of the Ribeiradio dam.
Paivascapes #1 - Paiva River Sound Festival will be the subject of Patrick McGinley's Framework radio show to be first broadcasted on the London-based Resonance 104.4 FM station, on April 10th at 10:00pm local time and following on several European and US radio stations. The radio piece to be broadcasted was composed by Rui Costa and is entitled "Around the River Bend". It features a variety of locations, times of day, seasons, and contexts including recordings of the Paivascapes #1 festival performances, source material collected by the artists for their sound and audiovisual installations, sound clips included in Binaural/Nodar's Paiva River Sound Mapping project, spontaneous recordings of social gatherings during the festival, and improvisations made by children inspired by the river soundscapes or by the names of the places where the festival happened, etc..
During the Paivascapes #1 Festival, which will take place from 4 to 8 March 2011, five new productions from Binaural/Nodar will be premiered. These works are the result of artist residencies developed in Nodar and of sound and video recording sessions made along the Paiva River. Manuela Barile Rheîa Zóontes Sound installation / audiovisual installation Happiness is the perception and the feeling of our own limitless expansion, when understood as encounter and fusion. Happiness is seen often as something instantaneous but it’s a condition that can be prolonged throughout life. Rilke talked about the “immense instant”, that which can be dilated as if time became space. When the Ancient Greeks would say that the gods were happy, they would use the expression “rheîa zóontes”, which means that life flows without obstacles.
