Old and New Forms of Inhabiting the Rural
Multidisciplinary Conferences integrated in the World Day of Architecture
Retiro da Fraguinha (Candal parish, municipality of São Pedro do Sul, PT)
Monday, October 3th from 10:00 to 18:00

Within the scope of the Voices of Magaio Festival, a conference series intitled “Old and New Forms of Inhabiting the Rural will be held on 3 October at Retiro da Fraguinha (Candal parish).” This conference series aims to celebrate the World Day of Architecture through a multidisciplinary reflection on the forms and legacies of traditional architectural techniques associated with agricultural production, and the possible ways to reuse them, taking into account the new post-rural paradigm that is growingly present in most of rural Portugal.

The conferences will be presented by both local inhabitants with knowledge of traditional building techniques and/or ancient ways of inhabiting rural spaces, as well as experts from different disciplines (architecture, anthropology, rural development, art, etc..), who represent a great diversity of organizations: cultural associations, universities, regional development entities, etc..

The conference series is coordinated by Luis Gomes da Costa (President of Binaural/Nodar and Associação Aldeias de Magaio, a network of rural villages in the Gralheira mountains) and Carlos Maria Valverde (MSc in Rehabilitation of Architecture and Urban Centers at the Faculty of Architecture, Technical University of Lisbon), and its contents will be later edited in eBook format by Edições Nodar, an editorial project from Binaural/Nodar.
