On August 4th and 5th, 2009 Binaural directed a sound action (entitled “Silence! Let’s Listen to Carvalhais”) within the context of Andanças 09, a traditional dance festival held in Portugal. The output of this action was a 25 minute sound piece based on field recordings made the day before in the rural area of Carvalhais (S. Pedro do Sul, PT). This piece was simultaneously projected on six stereo sound systems located in a football field thus creating a huge sound mass that could be heard throughout the festival site. At the same time the piece was being presented to the festival audiences, eight national and regional Portuguese radio stations were also broadcasting the piece: Rádio Renascença, Rádio Clube Português, VFM – Vouzela, Rádio Lafões – S. Pedro do Sul, Rádio No Ar – Viseu, Rádio Viriato – Viseu, Rádio Universitária do Minho and Rádio Universidade de Coimbra. This was the first time that in Portugal an experimental sound piece was simultaneosly broadcasted in several radio stations.
